My favorite way to ride The Loop is to take Ranch Road 337 all the way to Campwood. At Campwood, you may begin to realize that you are only about 60 miles from the Mexican border. The land is a little more rugged looking and it always seems a little drier and dustier than it is Leakey only 21 miles to the east. Turn right on SH 55 and in four miles at the town of Barksdale veer to the right on RM 335 and head into Nueces Canyon.

After a run up this little road, you will feel like you've ridden the world’s longest roller coaster. Mile after mile you alternate between bottoming out your suspension in the dips and exploring zero gravity as you crest the hills. An interesting sight along RM 335 is a ranch a few miles north of Barksdale. You will see a variety of exotic animals, including a couple of Camels. The wall around the ranch is like a fortress. The top of wall is covered with broken bottles embedded in the concrete. It looks like it might be a little tough to climb over the wall.

Getting to Camp Wood is easy and well worth the ride.

Tinker Comes to Town

Tinker, the pre-historic T. Rex, has found a new home in Camp Wood. Tinker was found in the Hell Creek Formation of western South Dakota. This is an area that suffers extremes of climate, blistering summers and vicious winters. There aren’t a lot of people living here; in fact, there isn’t much of anything including trees. There are a lot of fossils.

"The Tinker Discovery Team is headed by Ron Frithiof. T. rex fossils have traditionally been nicknamed and "Tinker" was chosen based on Ron’s own nickname.

"It just seemed the right name. There wasn’t ever any doubt," said a team member, "but to name it Tinker."

"About five years ago, Frithiof began buying and collecting fossils after considerable prodding from his younger brother Rick, who had already been collecting fossils for several years. But soon he went from purchasing them to actually going out to find fossils in the field.

"Ron is 52 years old, married with two daughters. Before Ron became a dinosaur hunter he built custom homes, condominiums and apartments in Central Texas. In addition to fossil hunting he is a land developer in the Austin and Hill Country areas of Texas. Ron also raises and sells exotic game such as axis, fallow, sika, and red deer on his Hill Country ranch."
